The Holly Run, The true version

Nothing too exciting really happened this year. It was a very cold start. As per usual Cookie was late turning up, as he couldn’t decide which of his many girls’ blouses he should wear.

A nice steady start saw much huffin & puffin from the cold air being sucked in. As we approached the foot of Harewood End, the phone went off, “ where are you?” asked Wobbly Bob, when told he said we must have been the group of cyclists he could see on the A49.

One thing that became very apparent was how slippery the little roads were. There was a look of pure fear as Bill approached the first down hill. On the other side of the coin, Mary attacked the hill leaving everyone in her wake. I was sure she was an accident waiting to happen. I suspected she just wanted the kiss of life off me!

The group at this point had become very elongated. As a responsible person I felt it best to look after everybody from the rear. At this point, we found young Tom inspecting the ice at close range. Having inspected the ice the previous week, a second inspection on the same side had removed the smile off his face. At this point Wobbly Bob on his mountain bike felt it best to walk with Tom down Orcop hill. For the rest at the bottom their descent seemed to take an age, which could only be timed with a sundial. At this point Cookie was sent back, but refused, as the blouse he chose was a little tight. Mary who was without fear took up the mantle to search for them, only to find them just approaching around the last corner. With a swift heave on the bars she was then turning on the spot heading back. 2 minutes later Tom & Bob had covered the 30 metres to us. The race was now on to the coffee stop a ¼ mile later. Derek & Mary (different Mary) were waiting with the cowbells greeting us with nice hot drinks and cakes. A quick game of darts later, the hall looked like it was suffering with a sudden case of woodworm. A steady ride saw the group split again; this time with some thinking they were being clever using a short cut. With local knowledge, I knew their route would be an ice rink on the side of a mountain.

Once at the Bridge pub, the odd beer was consumed before what can only be described as a fantastic meal. A few more beers were then consumed before the sensible people started to leave. Dave Harwood looked upset to be led away by Taff, his nominated driver. Bet he wishes he had rode out! At this point the volume on some people started to rise a little more. A couple of more beers later, Wobbly Bob developed tourets . At 6:00 us sensible sober ones led him out to his bike. At this point, we knew there was a slight problem. Bob could not cycle, or walk. With lots of concentration he got himself going. The only problem with this was he needed to inspect the road and the hedges on a regular basis. On the big climb up Garway hill Tim & Mary stayed to keep an eye on him. Cookie and myself had got to the top in fine fettle. On top of that mountain the winter breeze was racing in going through us. With The Moon public house beckoning us in, what could we do but go in for warm, and also compelled to buy a beer for the use of their warmth. !5 minutes turned into 25 waiting., best have another beer. As soon as it was bought the rest of the group turned up. As Wayne needed to get home the group left us, along with Wobbly Bob who now needed to phone his wife for help. Not a good thing to do with 2 small children in bed. But this may have saved him broken bones! As we waited it became apparent our glasses were empty again, but we were not in a position to leave Bob, so anther beer was ordered. Once Justine arrived, Cookie and I slid down out of view of the window till they had left; we didn’t want to find out how cross she was! Beer drank we left. The mistake made going down the little single-track road down to St Weonards. Avoiding the potholes and ruff surface managed to lose the front end breaking my collarbone. Cookie pulled me out of hedge before disappearing to get me transport home. Julie came out not very happy, to give me a lift home.

So as you can see, it was quite uneventful.

Hill Climb & AGM

Warming up in the sun
What a Clash of the Titans we had today, 1st to 3rd split by less than a second and a half! I think this could be the first time this year everyone had tested their lungs out in cold conditions. The frost very quickly burnt away, meaning it was ideal for shorts, but I did appear to be the only one who thought along them lines. You could feel the sun, which was very warm, but very cold in the shade. The crowds were almost 10 deep when I got there, with almost as many spectators as riders.

With conditions for racing (apart from the cold air) perfect, Jerry only just held onto the top spot this year, slipping into the 1:50’s. Is he on that downward spiral never to get back into the sub 50's?

Earl looked motivated finishing a mere half-second behind. My main man out on the course said both Jerry & Earl looked turbine smooth.

Third spot in contrast looked like a third world battle raging, as Will put in a stonking ride, only just losing out to two hill climb specialists. Was it the embrocation I gave him or all the secret training he had been spotted doing on the hill prior to today? In fairness 2 of them looked pleased and gutted at the same time when at least 2 of them thought they could have pulled a little more out of the bag if they had known how close it was.

Cookie had almost decided not to ride Thursday, but his competitive side came to the fore on the day. In fairness he’s not built for climbing, on this occasion just going over the 2-minute mark, will he ever get back under? “The Destroyer” stayed very anonymous looking after his number one. As he crossed the finish line he looked quite puckered with a very red face and the sort of breathing only suitable for phone calls.

With maybe not the best preparation I struggled up the hill, check this http://connect.garmin.com/activity/53303889 and tell me I wasn’t trying!

Tony has attempted all distances this year, but I’m willing to bet this was not his favourite. The man looked positively ill at the finish. This was not helped when Steve Millard said when Tony asked how far it was, “always further than you think”. Then to add insult to injury, he then realised he had to go back up Riggs wood to get home…

In only his second event, junior Mark again impressed spinning like a mad thing. Mark did complain that his gears were jumping as he raced a tractor up the hill. Was this dad’s way of making sure Mark didn’t beat him?

Young Tom impressed on his maiden event. He showed great control and skill on his mountain bike in his pre-race warm up. At the top of the hill, it was dad (The Spin dryer) who was out of breath. Tom managed the quote of the day with “I thought it would have been more harder”

Although Tom was a star, “Rider of the day” went to Will for what must have been a very satisfying performance, in the particular company. Cookie did suggest it was bad form practising on the hill for so many weeks beforehand. “Face of pain” had to be "The Destroyer” He only just beat “The Missile” who really did wish he could have rode. I suspect he would have done rather well. We will see next year if I was right.

Thanks this week go to Julie starting timekeeper, Audrey & John at the finish, and Steve Millard for pushing off.

Just to add more pain, the ride back home was horrendous, several Col’s and a 36mph sprint for 3 miles. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/53307272

AGM & Hill Climb News

Don't forget, this Sunnday is the Short Hill climb up Alt Baugh. Meet at the foot of the hill (Hoarwithy) at 10:00 for a highly explosive sprint up the hill. If anyone has a spare Oxygen bottle for afterwards, bring it along as I'm sure it's going to kill me one day.

Ginger kid struggles up a hill!

Monday night is the club AGM.
You need to turn up to support, elect, or vote for the way your club is run as well as vote for the riders rider of the year. The good thing with the riders rider is you can vote for your self! I got to read all the votes last year which was really interesting. This year I will not be reading them so it will even be a suprise to me as well..
Please make an effort to turn up to support those who have supported you all this year.

Vintage Tankard Canceled

Vintage Tankard Canceled
message from Chris at Newport
Having driven the VT course last evening, having heard there are temporary traffic lights, well there are lights and now extend over a longer stretch than previously told. Having spoke to the highways department they are expected to be there for several weeks.

Our other course, the one we used previously, has not been registered with either the police or the RTTC so that can not be used.

We have therefore decided, with regret, to postpone the VT until early next year.

Please pass on our apologies to your riders.

Chris

Abergavenny & Back

With the absence of John & Audrey, Wobbly Bob stepped in to help out by doing the timing, for which we who rode were all grateful.

Weather was warm but grey for an Aber & back, with a very light mizzle in the air. Wobbly Bob was in charge so dictated we start on time (GMT) for a change rather than use the more familiar “Ross Time”. The first thing that struck me this year was the lack of Jerry. In all the time I have been riding the event, he has been an institution.

We had a poor turnout this year with only 5 riders, but on the positive side we did have more marshals than ever helping out. Thank you all who got up to support, or was it laugh at us?

Harwood Attempts to steal Earls water bottle

Conditions were not too bad wind wise (apart from Taff who overdid the Butty Bach the night before) on the outward leg, only being felt dropping down from the Skirrid. From then on in, it felt like a tail wind back, the exception being the climb up to Pencraig, which was not pleasant.

As per expectation, Cookie romped home as winingest rider, not a million miles from his last year's effort. Might be interesting to compare our rides to see where he was losing time to me as he should have been a lot further ahead at the finish!

This picture is so wrong! Sooty eat your heart out

Second on the podium was Earl who looked super smooth, and was also looking forward to sparring with Jerry. Earl must be very pleased to have got under the 2-hour barrier, but also knocked over 8 minutes off his PB!

Mio managed a PB, in reality 5 minutes slower than anticipated, losing a lot of time going up the climbs. That seems to have been a real weakness this year. The other noteworthy thing was that was the second furthest event I have ridden this year as well.

Martin Green did not look 100% happy with his ride slowing down to chat for a few seconds going up the Dawn of Day before gapping me. His suspicions were he was still tired from training (running I think he said) the day before. It may not have helped his time whistling into Abergavenny missing the turn onto the bypass.

What a surprise to see Tony “The Tiger” Price up for the fight. He was reported as saying it was easy as he went through Monmouth. Oh how that changed for him in the last 8.5 miles, for the unaware the last 2 climbs give a rider a good kicking just when you think things can’t get any worse, and for Tony they got worse. This feat caused me much thinking. Earl had done a cracking ride knocking a good chunk off his PB, but I think rider of the day had to be Tony. He put in a good time, in relation to his normal performance, but more directly, he was operating well outside the box, having probably never actually ridden that far ever in one go. Tony, you can correct me if I’m wrong.

Thank then to Wobbly Bob (Robin Hill) timing, The Destroyer pushing off (not riding because he had a cough), Mary, Taff and Dave H. marshalling. Official photographer was Andy Parker, who I’m sure will give me access to his pics in the near future.

AGM is in October. Anyone got the date, as I can’t find it? More about that soon.

Vintage Tankard is 10/10. The team is shaping up nicely now. Fresh signings in every day.

The Hill climb is on the 17th at Hoarwithy.

Kilo Sprint Vintage Tankard News & rides

Conditions for this year's Kilometre Sprint were close to perfect. There was a very slight hint of a breeze down the straight but not enough to really help. The Km sprint is a pure power event, with horsepower counting for everything. Launch technique, aero factors, and top end endurance at the finish all play their parts.

Top dog this year, as last year was young (or after his 30th birthday Saturday old) Will. If interested in power and performance stats check

http://s2.excoboard.com/rosscyclists/142017/2224930 for outputs from riders. Will informed me he took off in too big a gear meaning a stint at practising a track stand for 45 seconds. I managed to up my game this year, wishing I had used top gear earlier as the horsepower at the end was good.

Dave "The rev happy" Harwood looked very fast, but we suspect the gearing was a tad too low. Not happy, he did attempt another go at the race, but he had already used the best of his reserves. By contrast, "The missile" looked quick off the line. He too went in for the high RPM approach but with a lack of machine maintenance lost ground towards the end due to gear slippage, as seen on the link above. The zero to 25 mph times are on there as well, which were quite interesting....

Tony "The Tiger" put in what must be his best performance this year, which I'm 99.9% sure he was happy with. This now shows me he has some ponies in them legs. Just need to make them go a little further on an outing.

Struggling to remember which bike "The Spin Dryer" used. Am positive it was his TT machine, which gave him a good improvement from his last outing on the KM Sprint. Afraid I did not see you go so cannot offer any constructive/destructive criticism this week. Mr. Webb had his first go at a KM. Not a bad starting point for future attempts.

Come try it rider Marlon appeared to have enjoyed rising to the challenge in his first TT. I think he has a lot of strenght in his legs, doing a very respectable first ride. I hope to see more of him through the winter and into next year.

Next came another first time rider, but in the junior category. "The destroyer" brought "The Mini Destroyer" out for his first taste at racing. Followed along the course with dad as a chaperon he just edged out Matt Fallon, another chaperoned by dad. At the end only 3 seconds seperated the 2 of them. I must at this point point out that Matt was riding dad's touring bike which was a tad too large for him. Paul is looking for a more suitable weapon for Matt at a very reasonable price if anyone knows of such an item.

Mr President brought up the rear, matching his time from last year, and worrying "The Chairman" with the way he sprinted away from the start. Thanks this week to Julie at the start, Audrey at the finish, The Chairman for pushing off, with "Mike The Post" spotting at the finish. He did need binoculars to spot my number because of the speed I was traveling at the end. Afraid I almost got to Preston's cross roundabout before I could turn around.

Rider of the night this week goes to the 2 youngsters Matt & Mark for the different styles and spirit in tackling the course. Well done Boys.

The Vintage Tankard is now scheduled for the 10th October. You need to stay fit for a little longer see below and let me know if you're in.

Hi all
The Vintage Tankard this year will take place on the 10th October 2010, start time will be 10.10. (10 past 10 on the 10th of the 10th 2010) easy to remember.

The course map is available on our web site. (
www.newportphoenix.org.uk)

Please let me have a list of your riders and their season's best time so a start sheet can be drawn up.

Those wishing to stay on for lunch will be most welcome, again we will need approximate numbers to pre- warn the dinning establishment.

Cheers
Chris Davies

Evening rides

Starting again this week we have Thursday night Winter rides. Meeting at the Rowing club for a 7:00pm prompt start. Expect between 12-22 miles depending on who's out. We look after the slowest, as it's not a race.

Tuesday night rides are still happening every Tuesday. They leave the Rowing club gate at 7:30 every week, they too are steady rides covering maybe a few extra miles.

The Long Hill Climb

The Bovril event in my opinion, you either love it or hate it.

With the weather deciding we had to endure another wet night, only 7 warriors turning up to challenge the mountain that ascends all the way the to Ruardean. There were several groupies turned up to support the honourable warriors for the foreboding feat ahead of them...

The reality was it was wet. Signing on was wet. The ride to the start was wet. Funny enough it stopped raining for the start, but the road was wet. Once through the trees, it was like a different world. The sun was almost shining as we pushed through the cloud and fogginess of the bottom of the climb.

Young James warms up for the future

Fastest rider of the night was Will. Having done lots of training for the event, managed to go like a bullet from the start, cooking himself at half distance. Obliviously he did just enough to win, as the man mountain that is “The Missile” was only 7 second behind him. Congrats to Sam on the birth of another daughter. The sleepless nights may have just hindered a win…

A delighted James stood on the podium for 3rd spot, not a million miles from the two in front. “The Destroyer” turned up with his TT bike and aero wheels. We never actually found out if he got down in a aero tuck but was only 6 seconds behind James. I favour “The Destroyer” again next year for even more success over a larger range of events.

Young Alistair fancied his chances on the Longer hills, but looked slightly disappointed with the time at the end, only scoffing that he had got pay back for me beating him up steeper climbs. I won’t say I wasn’t trying, but I’m willing to bet I felt the most comfortable at the top. I could even have done it a again if I had needed to. I notice the Ross Gazette put my performance down to my age, as if?

Last home was Tony on his first outing up the hill. Afterwards I could see him formulating a plan for next time. Not sure what it was, but will probably be evident next year!

Rider of the night was Sam for moving such a large mass up hill at such speed.

Thanks this week to Dennis for pushing off. Julie and Mary at the start, with John & Audrey at the finish.

Next week is the KM sprint. Park sensibly. Not at the pub if you’re not using it or the village hall, where there were some very interesting yoga lessons last year.

Don't forget its the long hill climb this week, meeting at the car park at Kern Bridge

Handicap 10 A Ringers Story

Hef & Rich turned up to the wrong start point for the hanicap 10

The Night was wet.

I expected the throngs to turn up on mass just to see what they were given for a handicap. It never happened, with several categories already sorted as to who had won them. I had my money on Will pulling the handicap feat a second year running. As it was, “The Missile” scuppered his day! In what was one of his most impressive rides this year he almost beat Will on time as well. It would appear he had been sand bagging all year as well…

Will had been doing his quickest rides on Old Gore, so I knew he had more in the tank for Walford. As we had been so close all year, I thought it only fair to give him the same handicap as me. If it had been based on his Old Gore time then he would still have lost out to “The Missile” by 7 seconds.

Disappointed with his time “The Spin Dryer” took the 3rd spot on the podium. I was impressed with James on the flat bits. Willing to bet the 26 happen easy next year.

First Lady home, and forth-in handicap Mary still had her customary smile for the finish. The Scratch time everyone should have done was 21:37 by the way.

Tony “The Tiger” looked like he had gotten very wet by the finish. Time to shave them legs to be that little more areo. Me don’t ask, lets just say, my legs failed to fire till the turn.

Bill had a disappointing ride as sparing partner Mike “The Post” failed to turn up to sort out who came out best in the 753-points competition, it was that close.

“The Destroyer” turned up on his road bike with mudguard and wasn’t going to ride before he was talked into it. He had become complacent due to the fact he could not be caught in the yellow category of the 753. He even slowed down to walking pace to cross the line. Unluckiest rider of the night had to be Webb. He decided he didn’t need all the teeth on his block after chewing them off with a not quite so nice gear change. Rider of the night was “The Missile”. Next year I expect far more from you.

Thanks this week to Julie for timings. Steve Millard for the push to the monument and John & Audrey for the turn.

Please note the date of the Vintage Tankard and our hill Climb will almost defiantly be changing. The Vintage Tankard looks set to be on the 10th oct. The Hill climb a week later on the 17th

Last Old Gore of the Year

Last Old Gore of the year didn't fail to disappoint some.

With The Cookmiester out of the picture there were a few fancying their chances of being "The Ross No 1."With the wind conditions as they were, with a slight cross wind helping a little on the return leg, I could not see any useful times appearing on the results sheet. I was wrong again..

Forest rider Dave Evans put in a really good performance, not a million miles from the record.

Best of the Ross crew was our old club champion Jerry looking very pleased with his ride only seconds away from his PB on this course. Very very close behind was Will, whose best time for a club 10 is on Old Gore. How does that work? Is he sandbagging for the handicap?

“The Missile” has just at the end of the season started to show the power he has lurking in his legs. Wait till next year, I’m sure he’s not going to be so slow out of the box. Well a contented Fallon took his scalp back off “The Destroyer” with one hand only to give it to “The Missile” with the other. It’s not often Fallon smile but he was this week. “The Destroyers" mission was to get into the 25’s on Old Gore, which he just did. Well done, as I failed badly this week. Too much good living in France maybe.

“Dave The Tri-athlete Pearce” maybe has started to get a handle of the Old Gore course, having improved ever time he’s been out on it. My advice this week must have paid off…

Wobbly Bob was a little off the pace tonight. Forgot to interrogate him as to why. I swear Tony wasn’t trying as I past him, but his time suggests different. Was that for my benefit?

Paul Cooper asked what time was classed as a reasonable first ride. I’m pleased to say he was within the parameters set out before he rode. The Mike and Bill battle still rages. This one could go on for years. Bill was overheard to say, “ he’s almost taken a minute out of me”. Not sure if he was happy or sad about it.

Mary was first lady home looking quite tired from her efforts. Vivien had to settle for the lantern rouge position looking very happy, but with the most awesome red glow I think I have ever seen.

Rider off the night this week was Will for his best 10 time for the year. His card has been marked for the handicap now though.

Thanks this week go to Julie or pushing off and time keeping. That girl has now learnt the art of multi tasking. John & Audrey did the turn.

Thanks last week to Will & Sam for their efforts. Wills predicted times were a nice touch, and the lovely Sam did the timing, which it was said she used a atomic clock for accuracy.

Last Walford next week
. It’s the Handicap 10. Don’t be late. Looks like it could be a short course again

Walford - 5th of August 2010

Well the traffic lights remained this week but moved a little bit further to Lydbrook so a slightly shorter course at 8.72miles.

Many thanks to Sammie Hudson for doing the time keeping, Tim Milnes for pushing off and John Hall for doing the turn.

Belated thanks to Mary for doing the time keeping last week!

Results are below, with an extra column as requested by a few, your Fun Time. What you may have done if it was a full course presuming you could of kept the pace up!

Rider of the night is a tough one, was very close almost going to Sam Walker for getting within a second of Fallon but it was Taff who took it for doing a 21:26 which is a great ride, potentially putting him into the 24min mark! Watch out for him at at the handicap in a couple of weeks!

Next week is Old Gore, 6:45 sign on at the latest for a 7:00PM start!

Cheers

Will

Old Gore - 29th of July 2010

Morning all,

Well we had another good turn out at Old Gore last week with 20 riders keen to tackle this lumpy course!

Many thanks to Alan Jones for pushing off and John Hall for marshaling the turn.

Rider of the night goes to Andrew Jones for such an quality ride with Dave Harword coming a close second!

David Evans has kept his recent form after setting a record at Walford , he has done the same at Old Gore. Record previously was 23:23, so a good 13 seconds off!

EDIT: Sorry this is incorrect there is a mistake on our website and the record is actually 22:38, my apologise to the current record holder Mr Cook

See you all this coming Thursday for Walford, if the road works are there we will run the shorter 9mi course again.

Remember we are now back to 7:00PM first man off, which means signing up at the LATEST of 6:45pm.

Thanks

Will Bevan

Ye Old Gore & Walford 10

Next Weeks start time is 7:00

What a fool, forgot to put the link on last week. Still you all know the procedure by now!

Old Gore

On a wet and wild windy/rainy night I was expecting next to no one to turn up for the Old Gore 10. I thought to myself there are some very easy points here in the 753 tables. How wrong I was. Every man and his dog turned up with the exception of Wobbly Bob and The Missile still fresh from his first 22 minute 10.

The rain started about 7:00, and then just slowly started to get worse and worse. The wind was coming from all directions, which once up and running never seemed to be a severe headwind anywhere, but at the same time managed to slow proceedings down. Cookie having said if he managed to do a sub 20 minute 10 Saturday (19:18) he would buy a set of rotor rings. Anyway with them now fitted, tested them out the first time in the process had the quickest time of the evening. He was the only one who didn’t notice there was a wind out there.

With Paul Fallon’s Mojo fresh back from the cleaners, the signs of a return to form could be on the way, securing second spot on the podium this week. Will’s magic failed this week, a course that works for him. “The Destroyer” fearing his holiday would lose him his lead in the 753 was in a determined frame of mind, just doing the bizz. This week’s Rider of the night goes to Taff, stealing the fine scalp of the racing Sec along the way. I hang my head in shame. Well-done Taff.

Dave Pearce back on his TT bike was a little slower than anticipated. After a scorching ride in a road bike 10, I expected a little more. Position on the TT machine may require some re working. James now has a new machine, unfortunately, it’s not allowed out in poor conditions. Tony looked good on the bike but, the time suggested he may have struggled over the last 4 miles. Dennis brought up the rear, questioning himself as to why he ridden.

Thanks this week to Bus pass Taylor for pushing off, John & Audrey at the turn and good ol Julie at the finish.
From Gareth at Newport

Alright mate after coming up to your no TT gear TT I thought it was a good crack so I have managed to talk our club in to doing one. Its on the 10th of August if you fancy coming along and you are welcome to ask if anyone up with you would be intrested. Feel free to pop along. Dave H or Cookie can give you details for contacts or e-mail him on "bean_rees x hotmail.com" (take the spaces out and change the x for a “at” sign)

Walford 10

What a difference to last week’s event. With skies that looked like they were getting ready to dump their load upon us, several key players failed to pitch up. The Yellow group turned out in force last week and got soaked. With the thought of getting soaked again most failed to turn up this week. Now the truth. This is how it really played out. Everyone felt guilty about stealing point in the 753 off “The Destroyer” whilst he was on holiday.

With his form most definitely coming back “The Terminator” (actually T1000 model) popped in the fastest performance of the evening. At this stage, must say the course was shortened to 9 miles due to traffic lights right outside Walford School.

This may affect the Forest event on Tuesday forcing them to relocate or shorten their course. Top Ross doggy was young William. This week he turned up with ballet tights around his calves, trying to convince us they were compression socks. The Missile now has him locked in to his sights only 30 seconds behind.

Taff again put in a really good effort. Where is he suddenly finding this speed? Dave Pearce this week looked happier on his TT machine. This week I did the pushing off. You get to look at everyone’s bike etc; he’s a big strong lad (in the nicest possible way). Am guessing he does triathlons.

James still hasn’t brought the new machine out, but the thought of riding it has improved his time this week. At last, Chris has turned up for his first TT. As he left the start line, you could see the power as he smoked the back tyre for the first 20 metres. He may have gone a little too fast off the line out to the turn leaving not quite enough to get back. Am expecting far better times off him once he learns the art of pacing himself.

Tony came over the line like he’s done a CTC event. I want to see blood and guts, not a big friendly smile! If it had been the full distance, I reckon Bill would have just slipped under the half hour for the first time this year. Mary had a lovely red glow as she crossed the line, with young Matt Fallon only 9 second behind. Was she blushing about being chased by a young man? Matt obviously enjoyed chasing Mary, but was also very happy with his ride, already planning how he’s going to attack the event next time. Rider of the night this week is James. That 26 minute 10 would have happened this week if it had been the full fat 10 miles.

Helpers were Me launching you. Julie adjusting your time if you question her, John, Audrey & Alan Taylor at the turn.

Walford Record Altered

What a night!

There were a few kicking themselves once they had seen the time and the number of new PB's being done. Conditions were just about as good as they get, warm with no breeze.

Pre race hype was apparent from the word go, with many checking other peoples scalp prior to racing. With Cookie out of the picture, and Dave H not around, the pothunters gathered like flies around a horse dump!

Fastest on the night was a determined Dave Evans, who just managed to shave 2 seconds off Cookies course record. Well done!

Time keeper preparing for her racing debut

Fastest Ross Man this year was Jerry keen to get his hands back on to the Jack Morgan Trophy. I may have inspired him to go that bit faster as I had already inspected his thatch. He looked very happy with his time as well. Jason out on the TT machine put in a respectable time in, not so far in front of me with another 27 seconds off my PB.

"The Destroyer" thought he had done enough to have my scalp draped over his handlebars, but now knows he has more work to do! This was the battle royal of the evening with "The Destroyer" only just holding off a flying Fallon, with Wobbly Bob feeling he needed to be in on the act as well. "The Destroyer" and The Wobbly one both had a PB.

The Wobbly One looking puckered

Martin Green's legs are just starting to kick in from our French trip with a PB on our end I think (The route in France and stats here. Press forward to advance a day for the next stage http://connect.garmin.com/activity/39064674 the only thing lacking was a temperatures gauge, which at times were up near the 40’s C.)

Taff always looks the part warming up, tonight he was a happy chappy as this was his first time into the 25’s bracket. Bazza Bailey was another Frenchy who also was happy his times were moving in the right direction. Jamie looked a little warm when he finished. I assume he found it hard out there!

Still not spoken to Dave Pearce properly, but looking at his times so far, they have been tumbling for the last few weeks. James was a happy bunny as well, his first outing into the 27’s. What I could see was he was on a much bigger gear than usual. Well done, you looked very happy afterwards!

Another moving into new territory was young Alistair, finally getting into the 27’s club. Tony P has been out training with Taff, which Taff has happily taken the credit for in Tony’s big improvement in time removing a hefty 1-minute off his best. Young Bazzeling put his French training to good use also knocking 53 seconds off his best. He also looked the most stylish crossing the line! Wayne’s time are moving in the right direction, if there was a prize for most stylish peddling action then Wayne would have won it.

The Mike and Bill Battle rumbles on, with Mike Just coming out on top. Dennis even with tired legs from his mammoth 12 hour ride (Ross 12 hour champ this year http://www.welshcycling.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=124:12hrchamps&catid=36:welshchamps&Itemid=110 ) managed to improve, The wily Silver Fox potentially spoiling his handicap time later in the year! Gerald has chipped away all season, another to improve. Willing to bet he never thought he would be going so quick this year.

Mary Munchkin improved locking onto Gerald as a target. Will she catch him before the end of the year?

Bringing up the rear we had the old school avant-garde. Siz this time out had the upper hand, with the president getting one over Peb.

Thank you’s this week belong to Will doing the turn and wishing he had rode, Julie timing, and Matt Parker pushing off, with Andy his bro organising him in the back ground.

Rider of the night, what a difficult one. We really struggled to chose as there were so many special performances. Runners up were (not that it’s a consolation) Dave Evans, Wobbly Bob, Taff & James, which means this weeks rider of the night Is Tony Price for that whole minute

Next week is an Old Gore 10

Forest event is the Lindsay Venner Memorial 10, which I’m positive, is a road bike event. No Aero!

Don’t forget, The Don Woodman is on the 18th. Still wanting volunteers, cakes etc. Give me the nod if you can help out.

Social Rides to replace the TT

As a chance to do something different with the event cancelled there is going to be MTB ride at 7pm from the top of Roman way (next to the playground) thanks to James Wilson. The group is aiming to be back in Ross for 8:30pm taking in the local Chase/Penyard woods.

To cater for those who don’t have a MTB and want to get a ride in as well, we also have a second ride planned.

A ‘winter’ social ride on the road bikes as well at the same time (7pm till 8:30pm). Normal meeting at the rowing club. Pace suitable for all that turn up.

I expect that this will be followed by a beer at the Kings head after a short interval for all to return home and freshen up.

Thanks

Will

Event Cancelled : Much Marcle 3 Laps

After riding the course this AM there is a section of the road that is weather damaged and poses a risk to all riders.

The road is damanged both sides through rolling sections including at brows of hills and through bends. This could potentially force both cyclists and oncoming traffic into the middle of the road.

There is a risk that this would cause an incident from either a collision or by forcing a cyclist into a pot hole or damanged portion of the road potentially causing an off.

I hope all understand this cancellation is for the safety of all riders.

Road bike 10

Wow, another record turn out, this time at Old Gore for The Road Bike 10. In what several others and I thought were perfect conditions, a few others thought it was a tad bit breezy. Yer wrong!

Being on the road bike should show up who's got the perfect aero package and who's got horsepower. Most of the results were to plan, but there were a few anomalies in the equation. I will attempt to solve who's done what with what...

On the top of the trophies podium was Cookie. On the cross over point he looked to be on the money and has produced what I consider one of his better rides. If only I could have pushed him more up the finish I think I could have made him spew (aero working on TT bike).

Vorest Andy had a steady ride out on the flats till he got to the hills. This was his territory and made it work for him (needs to work on Aero kit). Jerry another good all rounder made the ride work for him. Investment in some good kit would pay some big dividends (needs to work on Aero kit).

In his first appearance at a Ross event, Gareth put in exactly the sort of performance I was expecting. Still in his learning years he has the ability to do anything cycling wise well at all levels (needs to work on Aero kit as position is good).

Dave H always has good horsepower, but the weakness is the time it lasts. Not quite long enough on a hilly course (aero working on TT bike). One of the Flies in the ointment this week was Martin Green. He managed to punch well above his weight making a few people check their results and his a second and third time. He himself feels that maybe he should race on the road bike as opposed to the TT by now (TT bike position must need some work).

The madding crowds were expecting bigger things from Will but sadly they were not to be (aero working on TT bike). “The Terminator” Matthews was one of the strongest people I’ve ever seen on a bike in the past, put in a performance about where I would have expected (need to work on aero kit or position). Fallon and I were both satisfied with our rides apart from wanting a faster time (both maybe needing to look at our position).

Hmmm, “The Destroyer” looked destroyed by the end, “I’d got Carter”, sorry to gloat but it had taken all season to do that, may have punched slightly below his weight or did it mean see summary (Aero working brilliantly). Another stopped dead in his tracks “The Sam Missile” was expected to do a tad better (the aero you’re using good, but room for improvement) with Wobbly Bob still only seconds behind you (aero working on TT bike).

Have I been unfair to this group was my question digesting what I had just wrote? Initially yes I thought, but then one of the candidates for rider of the night was just a handful of seconds behind them! Taff the “The Surface to air Missile” (he enjoys the name change every week) put in a really good ride that he was Super happy with (Aero not right at all, I think it’s position or mental). Aaron from Gloucester was spot on where I would have expected. Pretty sure he does not us any aero aids. If funds are there, may help drop your times further in future. “The Animal” again has done the bizz in his category (aero working, more investment bigger returns).

Tom, I think found conditions hard and was spotted using a 40mm front wheel. Naughty boy! (Review of Aero kit may be required). Sorry Dave P, have no past data of you so cannot say how your ride was except you averaged 21mph on a hilly 10.

“Simon the Pie man”, one of the bigger surprises of the night. I thought you would have pushed a little harder further up the field (aero working on TT bike very effectively). Clive C gotta make an apology, missed him out last weeks in the 50 (2:16:20) result and I got his time wrong in the event mixing the second up doing a 27:24 not a 27:42. Sorry! If you spot a mistake like Clive did, let me know. I’m not perfect, but hey, I sure am close tho!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (aero working).

“James The Spin dryer”, no current aero kit. This was the event to make you shine. “I have a cunning plan” said just like Baldric off Blackadder. Remove all the front chain rings off your bike. Put just one back on that has 56 teeth. Rear block should be 18 down. This should slow the rate of revs converting into more forward speed. We really need you to push a slightly bigger gear (aero none applicable). Andy H, if that’s your first ride then you should be happy chappie with that.

Wayne definitely looked the part, almost making the pros on world tour look like amateurs. Lack of miles though show on a hillier courses (not sure what Aero you have been using, if at all).

Bright eyed and bushy tailed, fresh back from the good ol USA, Tim made his first outing of the year. Not bad for a first time out(no aero kit, none planned). A slight surprise was Fletch lurking down the bottom end of the field. His lack of miles showing. Riding to work should have big gains. He was very quick in places but lost time in others during the ride, but could not put a finger on where though (not sure what Aero kit being used). Dennis used his TT bike and asked beforehand if I was going to disqualify him. How could I, as he has been a stalwart of the club for so many years? (aero working) The honours for the final spot was a close fought thing between Mary & Gerald, with Gerald coming out just on top. (neither use Aero). Thanks this week to

Rider of the night in the end went to Mary for the vast improvement though we should say it was very close with Martin and Taff who knocked last year’s performance into the weeds.
Next week is a Walford 10 starting very promptly. It’s the day before I disappear for a quick dash to the Med. I’m sure Will will do the Blog in my absence if you all suck up to him. The week after is Marcle 3 circuits. If driving find somewhere sensible to park. Only use the pub if using the pub, same with the village hall. Will and Sam and Julie will be there in Charge. Give them no grief. We need a marshal on the first turn to run the event & signs out. I trust there will be a volunteer in my absence.

Offers of help are coming in, as are the entries for the Don Woodman. Still need more of both

See you all soon

Edwin Hargraves wants helpers for the 12 hour. He needs whatever you can offer. I will be there helping and at the same time supporting Dennis (our 80 years young and only individual in the 12 this year), if you can help out give me a ring

10/6 Walford 10

A wet and wild Walford greeted 23 riders this week. OK, so I’m lying about the wet, but it sure was windy, to the point of not bringing the bling wheels out. I have learnt for next time, as the breeze died down a little before the start.

Cookie surprised everybody by winning again. Will put in a really good ride, but the question remains, did he take pace off that lorry doing 15.993 MPH or was he held up? I’m pleased to say Paul Fallon found the conditions hard, with both of us left looking at each other later trying to figure out what went wrong. Had we both had bad rides or did everyone normally around us put in some stormers…. I use “The destroyer” as a marker of performance, which looking at the facts, suggest he has slowed down slightly.
What a fine figure of a man that Race sec is

This must have been one of the closest battles with so many people for years, with Sam “The Missile” attempting to destroy “The Destroyer”. Only 3 seconds in it. Wobbly Bob found 24 seconds of speed to have both of them in his sights. Anther 5 seconds later Martin Green is hunting them all down, with his last season’s form appearing to be returning.

Simon Burke continues to be hammering chunks off his times. I reckon this must have been a PB for him. Bus pass Taylor looked very pleased (as did a lot of other people) to have taken The Racing Sec’s scalp, not that he gloated about it. Taff managed to be the only person in the 26’s this week. “The Animal” put in a very fine performance, especially when considering he was held up by the same lorry that held Will up, but also stopped to have words with the driver who had been acting like a idiot on the road.

Clive Chappe had a steady ride also finding conditions not quite to his liking. Another upset by the lorry was Wayne, who thought he had lost about a minutes worth of time. The Spin Dryer’s legs must have been suffering this week, as he lost 44 seconds off his best time this year, possibly having been out training with “The Animal”. Tony P looked happy to have only lost 2 seconds from his PB in the conditions.

Paul Cooper looked really happy after his ride having knocked ½ a minute off his best this year. “The Silver Fox” was very happy with his result, but the flobber hanging from his face after was not to everyone’s liking till someone plucked the nerve to tell him about it. Mike “The Post” ended up tying with Dennis, pointing out there was only 35 years between them. New lass Penny was delighted to have improved, starting an impromptu dance with delight. I must point out the dance was not as good as Mary’s when she made her big improvement.

Gerald brought up the rear end having been studying the 753 table, not knowing he was leading the blue group. Last this week was Vivien, who found it very hard going, although she managed to improve on her previous time by 27 seconds. You can tell when someone’s really tried, and Vivien looked absolutely shattered by the finish.

Thanks this week go to Earl for pushing off, and Steve at the turn who was rather worried about it raining having an open top sports car.
Rider of the night this week had a few names crop up. But after much soul searching and a couple of beers, “The Animal” took the honours.

Next week is the Road Bike 10 at Old Gore. Park sensibly if driving out. The race is for none aero kit, on road bikes.

This means

No TT bikes.
No Aero helmets.
No Aero bars.
No Deep section Wheels.
You may have a baldhead though!
No Shaven legs- carpet or similar must be stuck on legs if you lack leg foliage.
You may have Shaven eyebrows after the controversy surrounding last year when someone used stuck on eye brows in scrutineering

Help wanted now for the Don Woodman 25. Any offers would be most welcome, contact Paul S
