Old Gored 10 25/7/13

Somehow it was a little quieter than usual, not sure how or why, there again we did have a hungry for action 11 riders queuing for the off. Perfectish conditions were the order for the night, slight tail breeze out, not enough to hinder on the way back.

Jwoones the Steam turns down a2nd Kebab

Taff & The Destroyer were fighting for the privilege to launch the riders once Julie had given the green light to start the field. Surprisingly, Will was one of the few riders not to hit peak terminal time for the course, but just about did enough to win. I think he should have used more ice packs in his pre-race build up.  Not sure what Millie’s been on, but he needs to share it, that must be an all-time best for him on here. Jwooooones the Steam certainly lacks the straight line speed, but more than makes up for it up the hills, on his rare return to British shores (Mr Missile, check the Strava’s you lost Friday and weep). If only I could get up that final hill……

Max, the day after a run, and a lack of miles was a little off his normal pace, which I suspect will all be changed by the time he next rides. Climb-On Andy not a million miles behind Max set himself a new PB which you could just tell looking at him how pleased he was with himself. Gazzer GasTec TM  after Sarah took his fine head of hair last week decided this week was the week to drop the hammer down, shift a few gears and light the timing lights up. Another with a big smile and a new PB, well done, more to come I’m sure. Just remember, it hurts the same every week, you just end up going faster as you get fitter.

Nigel’s first outing in a month was more than respectable , the Tuesday night rides keeping him fit (rides go out every week with Nigel or Bob the Boat leading). I can’t remember off hand the last time I saw Wayne out, but that’s got to be one of his better rides in a long time. He was buzzing afterwards, so will assume he too was happy with his ride.

It’s finally happened, less is more. A little less GBH* on the way out to the turn leaves more ABH* for the return leg. Paul Middleton finally dipped under the Magical sub 30 barrier for the first time. Last week was close, this week job done. Next week should see more to come, weather forecast not looking too bad!

In his first ride of the year, Paul Cooper turned up to set a time for the Handicap 10 to be based on. It proved he’s not completely unfit, I’m sure we’ll see more of him, ready to peak in a few weeks’ time.

Thanks this week to Master Turner Bill for sorting the turn out along with John & Audrey, Julie timing with the Taff & Destroyer show pushing everyone off.

Rider of the night this week is anther shared affair. Millie moved his own game on by some margin, with Our Northern Monkey Paul experiencing that sub 30 for the first time, both very deserving.

Other news, Will managed his first sub 20 minute 10, that would have been special for him as well.

Next week’s event is an Old Gored 10.
Wanted More photo's, as you can probabley tell, am running out of pic of you all....

Any helpers would be appreciated for next week

Jack Morgan 10 11/7/13

This event brings the pot hunters out, as there’s a nice trophy up for grabs. Talking of which Will’s now added another trophy to his collection. A slight tailwind home helped out slightly on the return leg, Will still recovering with a stomach bug was not happy again with his performance, lacking power.

Top gear action
I’d like to say we gave him a run for the money but alas, we’re making it too easy for him. I have a cunning plan for a downhill race down Bulls Hill in the dark. I suspect he would be beatable. Or a race from pub to pub, drinking a pint of Guinness in each till we have a champion who covers the greatest distance in 4 hours. Sorry, just thinking aloud, Julie would never time it…..

Best of the rest was Millie again, the boy’s been consistent this year, only faltered twice. I had an Ok ride, Taff ever improving as the weeks are rolling by. Season’s end is in sight already. Mike Dunsby, you said you were going to come out to get some value for your season ticket for all events.

Little Fallon was back after his sabbatical, straight on the money. Shame school exams get in the way!

Another old face (needs a haircut) was Radders. Not done any miles he said, not too shabby considering. I think he only turns up for some abuse.

A good battle was brewing between Gazzer Gas Tec and Sarah C. Gazzer just squeezing it by 2 seconds. What I can say was how excited Sarah was to have broken the 20 mph barrier. I think there’s a lot more to come, especially if we can get her into an aerodynamic position. I seriously think with the right kit, there is a 25 minute 10 on Old Gore to be had. Tempted to loan her some good kit!

Apologies if I’ve not mentioned you, my mammories are only so good.

Thanks to Julie timing, John & Audrey doing the turn.

Rider of the Night was Sarah. Just like watching a small child in a sweet shop with her first sub 30 10.

Marcle 3 lapper

Jerry in sight off the finish
3 laps Around Marcle is one of the more interesting events on the calendar. It showed a lot about the way everyone tackles the event. Near ideal conditions greeted 13 riders, just a slight headwind on the far leg to slow proceedings. Apologies for the initial results I worked out, I got Jon’s and Sarah’s wrong, but this has improved their average lap times…

Three riders managed to pace their laps to within 3 seconds, the first being our winningest rider Turbo Will. Will was a little disappointed with his ride, but with that sort of result, I’d have been happy. Will rides with power, so that slowest first lap could have been coming up to speed, the last lap, he was getting tired!

Next up was Millie. As he was driving home after he’d finished (I was still in action), I’ve never seen such a large smile in a windscreen coming the other way. The boy was happy to have gone under 50 minutes and scalped Jerry.

Jerry, looked in a world of pain, I’m sure, a little disappointed Millie went home with his scalp, then for me to pass him in the last mile. Another lap and I would have taken my minute back. I can picture him chuckling to himself as he’s reading it.

Happy chappy, a pb around there for myself, saving my best for the last lap, and watching Jerry explode in front of me.

Don’t know why I was laughing, Taff, was a mere second behind me, having had a stonking ride. He was wondering if Julie had shown some favouritism, well I’d be the last she would show favouritism to. Needless to say, he was still very happy with that result.

Wobbly Bob showed great consistency, another within 3 seconds every lap, well actually, he had 2 laps with the same time, first and last lap, one has to say great pacing. The Spinner also showed great pacing, the track work almost definitely helping, saving the best for the last lap. I personally think the wind died down slightly the last lap, which would have suited the riders with less outright strength, as the wind doesn’t seem to affect the faster riders as much I’ve found.

Clive was the third person to be within 3 second for each lap. Clive seems to manage this most years, suggesting he really knows how to pace himself. Sarah’s going to be far more happy when she sees the lap times. Initially I‘d worked them out wrong at the rowing club (well I was slurpin beer and holding a conversation at the same time, multi-tasking yes, triple tasking no!). What I can glean from these, maybe a tad too fast first lap, middle lap a recovery lap.

Hmmm not sure about Richie’s laps, a first attempt at the event, will be very interesting to see how he tackles it next year. He’s getting stronger every ride, so I suspect a bit of mind wander, thinking about his next TV appearance.

Paul just scraped under the hour. He took umbrage when I suggested his average speed was down, which when we worked it out, he was right. Good lap times, exactly what I would expect.

Looking younger than ever (must be all the racing) Jon appears to be really enjoying his cycling this year, pacing not a million miles off the mark.
New man Tim didn’t know what to expect of himself, so started at a pace he thought he could sustain for 3 laps. He seemed happy on his return, I think with a plan on what he’d do differently next time he rides.

Thanks this week lots of people. Julie timing, Dennis Beard spotting, Mike Dunsby on turn 1 (threatening to bring a brush next time) and Bill on the roundabout. Its an event we need the help on.
Rider of the night was Millie, just for the beaming smile.

Le Road Bike 10

The road bike 10 shows up those who have paid wisely for their speed. Struggling to recall what the conditions were like, but I have the feeling there was a slight head wind out. I was fresh from my Grand Tour, so felt very confident - pride before the fall they say.

Jonny’s form came good for this event, all part of the plan for a road race on the weekend afterwards. As you’re about to read, he was gifted the win, because Mr Missile as he passed me slowed down to have a chat and give me a shove towards the finish. This was the point where I warned him that would cost him first place as I could see Johnny had gone out of the traps like a scolded aardvark. In the end that 1 second cost The Missile the Gold.
Max had a lonesome 3rd spot with Taff moving slowly towards the front runners as the year is progressing. Me – either the aero kit is good or I had a shocker.

Paul M on the other hand was very pleased with his ride, giving him a real idea of where everyone is in the grand scheme of things.

New boy Tim fresh back to cycling after many years away was happy with what he’d done, creating a benchmark for further rides.

This was Sarah’s first event. Nerves /worry was obvious before the start. In the end, I think she really enjoyed it, knowing full well there was more in the tank to come.

Will cheated, rode his TT bike. He was actually just testing it, but alas his time was not a counter.

Thanks to Julie timing, Bill at the turn
Rider of the night was Jonny, a real jump in performance.
