1st Old Gore 10 in 2011

The first Old Gore came and went after months of hibernation and secret training. The weather was ok but with a slight breeze that seemed to come from everywhere, making it hard all the way around (seems to only be my opinion though).

For once we started on Proper Ross time, and as predicated had a very decisive victory, which left Turbo Will like a dog with 10 tails. To say he was ecstatic was an understatement. Alan Matthews (The T1000) slotted into second spot well away from what could be one of the seasons hottest battles between Dave H and “The Destroyer” . I struggled home with the fillings rattled out, so note to self for next time to try 90PSI in my tubs.

“The Missile” lead home a 4 way battle royal with Andy Parker in close pursuit, only just in front of Terry on the 1^st road bike home and Simon Burke finding his weight a slight disadvantage on the return leg .

“The Animal” took his first big scalp of the season just beating Happy Taylor on his fixed wheeled machine. Happy being happy was not happy till he had complained about the road surface after Marcle straight hence the fixed machine. In fairness he wasn’t hanging around apart from the up hills. The Spinner will get faster, it’s always hard first time out on lungs and legs that have not turned in anger for a few months needing coaxing back up to full steam. Tony chose to use his old bike, but seemed happy with his performance being a lot quicker this year than 12 months ago.

Do we have a rising star I the camp? Young Matt Fallon put in a super ride, encouraged by dad who looked to be struggling on his wheel in places. Julie was really impressed by Pauls encouraging Matt up the hill which could be heard from ½ a mile away. The poor little chapped almost chundered once past the finish. Well done Matt!

Some one has to come last; this week was new boy Ollie. I did tell him to just ride it and see what happens, setting a benchmark for the next time out. He did enjoy it. Unluckiest rider was Steve Millard, as he dropped 3800watts of power down, left a 15 foot darky before snapping his chain, game over!

Rider of the night this week was “Turbo Will” as voted down the club after. I don’t think I have ever seen some one so happy or unruffled after a race.

Next week we are at Walford, starting promptly so don’t be late as I’m expecting a big turn out.

Well some people came, had some top tucker at The Wilton Court before receiving The prizes and certificate from the previous seasons efforts. A few now seem very inspired to do better this year as a result of.

The Holly Run, The true version

Nothing too exciting really happened this year. It was a very cold start. As per usual Cookie was late turning up, as he couldn’t decide which of his many girls’ blouses he should wear.

A nice steady start saw much huffin & puffin from the cold air being sucked in. As we approached the foot of Harewood End, the phone went off, “ where are you?” asked Wobbly Bob, when told he said we must have been the group of cyclists he could see on the A49.

One thing that became very apparent was how slippery the little roads were. There was a look of pure fear as Bill approached the first down hill. On the other side of the coin, Mary attacked the hill leaving everyone in her wake. I was sure she was an accident waiting to happen. I suspected she just wanted the kiss of life off me!

The group at this point had become very elongated. As a responsible person I felt it best to look after everybody from the rear. At this point, we found young Tom inspecting the ice at close range. Having inspected the ice the previous week, a second inspection on the same side had removed the smile off his face. At this point Wobbly Bob on his mountain bike felt it best to walk with Tom down Orcop hill. For the rest at the bottom their descent seemed to take an age, which could only be timed with a sundial. At this point Cookie was sent back, but refused, as the blouse he chose was a little tight. Mary who was without fear took up the mantle to search for them, only to find them just approaching around the last corner. With a swift heave on the bars she was then turning on the spot heading back. 2 minutes later Tom & Bob had covered the 30 metres to us. The race was now on to the coffee stop a ¼ mile later. Derek & Mary (different Mary) were waiting with the cowbells greeting us with nice hot drinks and cakes. A quick game of darts later, the hall looked like it was suffering with a sudden case of woodworm. A steady ride saw the group split again; this time with some thinking they were being clever using a short cut. With local knowledge, I knew their route would be an ice rink on the side of a mountain.

Once at the Bridge pub, the odd beer was consumed before what can only be described as a fantastic meal. A few more beers were then consumed before the sensible people started to leave. Dave Harwood looked upset to be led away by Taff, his nominated driver. Bet he wishes he had rode out! At this point the volume on some people started to rise a little more. A couple of more beers later, Wobbly Bob developed tourets . At 6:00 us sensible sober ones led him out to his bike. At this point, we knew there was a slight problem. Bob could not cycle, or walk. With lots of concentration he got himself going. The only problem with this was he needed to inspect the road and the hedges on a regular basis. On the big climb up Garway hill Tim & Mary stayed to keep an eye on him. Cookie and myself had got to the top in fine fettle. On top of that mountain the winter breeze was racing in going through us. With The Moon public house beckoning us in, what could we do but go in for warm, and also compelled to buy a beer for the use of their warmth. !5 minutes turned into 25 waiting., best have another beer. As soon as it was bought the rest of the group turned up. As Wayne needed to get home the group left us, along with Wobbly Bob who now needed to phone his wife for help. Not a good thing to do with 2 small children in bed. But this may have saved him broken bones! As we waited it became apparent our glasses were empty again, but we were not in a position to leave Bob, so anther beer was ordered. Once Justine arrived, Cookie and I slid down out of view of the window till they had left; we didn’t want to find out how cross she was! Beer drank we left. The mistake made going down the little single-track road down to St Weonards. Avoiding the potholes and ruff surface managed to lose the front end breaking my collarbone. Cookie pulled me out of hedge before disappearing to get me transport home. Julie came out not very happy, to give me a lift home.

So as you can see, it was quite uneventful.

Jeux Aux Frontieres(“Games with Borders”…)

Hi all

We request the pleasure of your company on Friday 17th December at Broadwell Club(Palace-Baggsville) to take part in our version of Jeux sans Frontieres. The evening will start prompt at 20.00 so it is advisable that you arrive in plenty of time

Taking part will be 4/5 teams of 11 which must comprise of one married couple and several women or syblings. The teams will be named by your team captain who will also be responsible for selection of that team and who plays which game.

If you are interested in playing it is imperative that you contact one of the listed captains to book your place. There are only four current captains but a fifth will be formed if necessary. Judging by the response so far I think it may be the case. We also expect team captains to come with some added flair like dress code or RaRa girls for example…

The rules

Strictly no biting…

Air Hockey – all players play each other on league basis, each game has a time limit, 3 points for win, 1 for draw.. Champion decided on most goals scored if level points. One point awarded for male/female winners

Darts – all players play each other on league basis like above, 501 flying start, exact number finish, no double required. Points award as above

WeeGame – rules to be decided by Ade. Points award as above

Table Football(if required) As Air Hockey but best of 9 balls. Points award as above

Skittles – 5 persons on each team, 3 legs per team. Most total knock-downs wins. 2 points awarded for overaul winning team, 1 point awarded for winner of each leg, one point for highest scorer

Mr and Mrs – 3 points awarded

Joker Card – Polka Dot, Yellow,

You have two cards to play throughout the evening on any one game…

Polka Dot – double points
Yellow - triple points

Your card can be submitted on any one leg of skittles, all other games will be for winner only. Card cannot be submitted on skittles leg highest scorer. Card cannot be submitted on Mr and Mrs

Entry Fee

There will be a small entry fee for each person which will generate £50 to the winning team, all other proceeds will go to a Coleford Charity which Ade will inform everyone about in the near future.

To cap the evening,if we have time, GV will show a short film on Tour 2010 Shed to the Med.

There will be twits and turns all evening so be alert at all times… The judges reserve the right to alter the rules if there envisage running over time.

First session – 8.00 – 10.00
Second session – 10.15 – 11.15
Bar closes prompt 12.00
Some of the above might change slightly but we hope to stay as much to plan as possible.

Remember, this is a festive event so the minium we expect is happy faces, lots of fun, and a great Christmas Spirit. If you don’t manage getting into a team, or wish not to compete, please still come because there’s lots going on that that ony we know about, plus we might need an extra pair of hands here and there.

The Holly Run

That time of year, when we traditionally go out to get our Holly for Christmas. In reality, we actually go for a nice steady ride, have a good meal then trundal home in drips and drabs.

This year Bill apears to have done us proud by organising a new venue. It happenns on Sunday Dec. 12th at the Bridge Inn, Kentchurch. £12 a head less for kids. They can take up to 40. The dining room is heated! and has a nice view over the river. Also it's ales are recommended by CAMRA.
