What can I say, great to get all the ringers out at the same time, well done on the Team win, we even had 5 minutes to spare. If I'd know, I'd have eased off up the final climb.
As I pointed out before hand, it was a team event - you were all part of the succssess!

I did have a few doubts up to 2 weeks ago, but the BBQ ride fired the interest up. I'm not going to do a rider of the day, but fair plays Rick, awesome ride. Just a few pics at mo, I'm sure a lot more will turn up at some point. We did do a team pic but alas a few had dissipated - apologies

Well, there may have been 2 groups our, but the more steady social group actually did a bit more climbing than the social not quite so steady group. Both groups were well a supported, with a few new faces out on a couple of roads I'd never ridden. Both rides met up at the Dean Heritage centre for a coffee and cake before splitting up again. The steady group took a nice leisurely route back depositing Colin at the top of a mountain then doing a an extra 3 miles home. The not quite so steady group did an extended lunch stop in a scenic riverside pub. It was only extended due to slow service, not vast firkins being consumed.

A little later the merriment kicked off at the BBQ, which got the other half's out along with the wee ones. As far as I can tell everyone apart from the Animal had a super time. See Pic's

Thusday Night and The KM Sprint

Thursday night is the infamous Racing Snake Thursday night potter now the Thursday night events have now finished (managed to get 3 Thursdays in one sentence, 4 if you include this one!). This is not a race, merely a social winter regular, leaving the Ross Market place at 7:00pm promptish. We go at the pace suitable for the slowest rider out. You will need lights, spare tube and once the weather turns mudguards are a good idea and maybe not the best bike. As it will be nice this week (until it rains) your best road bikes will be suitable. It will be between 12 and 25 miles depending on who’s out and where we head.

This years KM only had 11 entries, weather may have put a few off being quite cool. Air was very dense, I’ve never know it so tough, with the times reflecting it. If you’re anywhere near your previous times then you’ve probably had a good one.

Hummingbird Legs Fallon, was well chuffed, not only a huge improvement in time but just squeaked in with the win, from favourite The Racing Snake. Jon Airey super surprised himself with the bronze medal not a million miles from the leaders. James the Quad dominant one  a mere 1 second further back took fourth. This may have been the catalyst to have a second go. Using that tried and tested thing of counting the seconds in his head on his second run figured he was up slightly at the finish. Reality was he was a second slower.  Tim N had a good ride, now with a benchmark figure for next year. 

 Last year’s 2^nd spot rider James found it a little harder this year, maybe  we needed another tractor to slow him down this year like last year. 

In his first race young Myles looked fast at the finish with the pedals spinning well, I see some potential in this young man.  Tom the Power struggled over the line. In fairness he looked worn out when he arrived. Tony the Tiger was another who struggled, not sure why as he usually excels.

 If you’re not used to redlining everything, then a KM sprint is going to hurt, poor Angie looked a little shell shocked at the end. It a learning event so it’s one of those scenarios where you have to do similar experiences for shorter times and build up getting the body used to the pain and oxygen deficit. For such a short quick event, it hurts lots. There’s only one event harder in my opinion!

Last home was the oldest rider, Gerald, again he was pleased with his time.

Thanks to Paul Fallon starting us off with Gary D pushing off. Julie did the finish; you could see she was twitching to be doing it herself. 

Rider of the night was easy this week, Jon Airey what a display, and he wasn’t even aero.

Next event is the Vintage Tankard on the 4^th October, I need names. Only a few down so far. Ladies you’re included. Forest is hosting.

The make you ill climb

That time of year that suits some more than others, good power, lightweight frame, young legs and young lungs. 16 braved the hill, all 2.3 miles of pain. Hummingbird Legs Fallon was up for smashing it, not quite managing his performance from last year, I sensed a little disappointment afterwards, don’t worry about it Matt; you won, and next year you’ll still be young, possibly stronger and wiser.

I tip my hat to young Huw, what a fantastic ride, you were flying, and I certainly didn’t expect you to pass me that soon especially as I thought I was on it. My words to the future for you are steer clear of girls and beer and you’ll go far.

I knew Max had it in him, a new PB up the hill, it may have taken all season but the form’s starting to come good, hopefully he’ll be out for the upcoming VT, which should also suit his strengths. 

Forest hill maestro Adam T just squeezed under the 11 minute closely followed by Adam M, who also looked a little disappointed to have gone a smidge slower this year. Adam, there’s always the steep one with the Trophy, you’re currently favourite for that one. 

Rich Wilson put in a great ride, showing there’s lots of strength and could also be a front runner for the steep one down at Hoarwithy. 

Another hill specialist Ant P took a creditable 7th spot, but I think there was room to have gone a tad quicker, as I would have expected you to take a little more out of me than that. Then there was I, happy as Larry to have had such a good ride (PB), tying with James The Spinner, who’d probably not predicted that.

The Quad Kid, James Coull was predicting the win before the start, and then sandbagged all the way up. Maybe, just maybe he’s thinking the steep hill climb’s another handicap event, so as not to jeopardise any potential handicap didn’t go at full welly.

Tim N was the last in the 12 minute category, just…. If I’m right in thinking, this was his 1^st attempt at the Long Hill Climb, it’s a good learning event as to how to read what your body’s screaming at you, next year I think you can knock another minute off your time.

1^st lady this week was Rachel, also her first attempt; I’m pleased you did so well. It’s a tough event and you performed brilliantly. Not a million miles from Rachel was Carol, another first timer, another very creditable effort. I hope you’re proud of what you have achieved.

Tony “The Tiger” may be towards the lower end, but, I was more than pleased with Tony’s exertion. When we had the de-brief in the pub afterwards, we worked out we were giving away 32 years and 4 stone to the winners. The plan was then hatched for a handicap hill climb at some point of loading everyone up to the heaviest person to see how much of a difference that made. Tony was also very keen to remove a single crank off the fastest rider to even things out a little more.

Jon A’s season has gone from strength to strength, but the one thing that’s slowed him down all year has been the hills. I sense he may need to focus on the weaknesses this winter. Last home but certainly not disappointed was Paul C. It was nice to see he was genuinely happy to have got up, at a decent lick.

Rider of the night this week was a toughie as several people shone. After a lot more thought than usual, I have decided it to be shared. Both Rachel and Huw have really impressed this week. Well done both.

Next event is the KM sprint; meet at Marcle by the school, signing on by 6:45. If riding out, a rear light will be a good idea. Come and improve your season average and show what a beast you are!
